WHAT WE DO

Our projects range in size and type but all are profoundly impactful for the real women and children in Kampala communities. With clean water, nutritious food, medicine and sanitation, education and spiritual trauma healing, we believe every Ugandan girl can be empowered to live a fulfilling life in service to the world. Explore our projects on this page, and see how you can contribute to this wonderful work.

Wells and Water

We dig wells to open the flow of clean water to 1000s of families otherwise drinking contaminated water in slums. We need more wells and are calling for your support!

Each year, waterborne diseases afflict millions of women and children in Uganda, primarily those living without safe, accessible water.

Of the most common waterborne diseases in the world, diarrhea is the most dangerous in our community. The latest research shows that diarrhea is the second leading cause of death for children under the age of five, causing more childhood deaths than malaria, AIDS, and measles combined.

That’s hundreds of thousands of deaths, but there is hope for the future. Experts believe we can end the global water and sanitation crisis in our lifetime.

Waterborne diseases are illnesses caused by microscopic organisms, like viruses and bacteria, that are ingested through contaminated water or by coming in contact with feces.

If every person on the planet was able to practice safe sanitation and hygiene and have access to clean water, these diseases would not exist. Governments, NGOs, and communities themselves have made great strides in the past 20 years to end waterborne diseases. Still, there is much to be done.

At AFEI, we not only provide sanitation and medical support to those affected by contaminated water, we also work to prevent these diseases by digging wells to open the flow of clean water to 1000s of families.

Education and Skills

We empower girls and women by bringing them to school and training them in vocational skills. We have helped over 460 girls and women escape sex work and hard labor by providing education and vocational skilling, as well scholarships and scholastic materials.

Under this program we help the children of homeless women and teenage mothers to go to school through sponsorship program. We also provide scholastic materials when possible.

We 100% believe we can break the cycle of poverty and homelessness by educating the young ones. There is nothing more fulfilling than watching a young street kid thrive through school and training and become sustainably self-reliant as she grows up to be a productive and happy member of Ugandan society.

We train women in craft-making, sewing and other skills that provide a sustainable income for their families and communities. This makes it possible to rehome street kids whose families have not been able to support them - now the entire family can thrive together.

Health & Hygiene

See the huge impact of good hygiene and proper health care. From vaccines against child-killing diseases such as polio to psychosocial and spiritual post-COVID support, hygiene education and distribution of sanitary pads.

We offer immunization services for children under 5 years against the child killer diseases like polio and COVID-19. We also provide continued check ups and treatment of water and hygiene related diseases like typhoid and infections prevalent in slum life.

We also distribute pads for young girls and women who often miss out on school because of inadequate sanitary wear. Coupled with this initiative we aim to empower young women with youth-friendly sexual education and clear spiritual principles to protect them from prostitution, teenage parenthood and sexually transmitted diseases like HIV/AIDS.
